Combine the oils: In a double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, combine the tallow and olive oil.
Melt the mixture: Stir the mixture occasionally until everything is fully melted and combined. This may take about 5–10 minutes. Be careful not to overheat.
Add Ins: Once the oils have fully melted and are well mixed, remove from heat. Let the mixture cool slightly, and then add the essential oils and vitamin E oil, if using. Stir to incorporate.
To Make Solid Tallow Balm: Pour the balm into a glass jar and refrigerate until it hardens. Once solid, allow it to reach room temperature before use.
For Whipped Tallow Balm: Pour the mixture into a shallow dish or bowl and allow it to cool down for about 20-30 minutes, or until it begins to solidify but is still soft to the touch (not fully hardened). (If it gets too hard, then whipping it into a smooth consistency will be difficult as chunks will remain throughout the balm.)
Whip the Balm: Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture on high speed for 3-5 minutes, or until it becomes light, airy, and fluffy. The texture should resemble whipped cream or butter.
Storage: Store your tallow balm in a small jar. It can last for several months. (Ours lasts well over a year.)
Use: Apply a small amount to your skin, especially on dry areas such as elbows, knees, hands, or feet. It’s a great moisturizer for the face or body too!
