Equipment

  • Hand mixer or stand mixer with a whisk attachment
  • Glass jar
  • Mixing bowl
  • Double boiler

Ingredients

  • ½ cup 4 oz grass-fed beef tallow (rendered beef fat)
  • 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil
  • 27 drops of a good quality essential oil optional, for fragrance and additional skin benefits – lavender, tea tree, or essential oil blend of your favorites
  • ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil optional, for extra skin nourishment and to extend the shelf life

Instructions

  • Combine the oils: In a double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, combine the tallow and olive oil.
  • Melt the mixture: Stir the mixture occasionally until everything is fully melted and combined. This may take about 5–10 minutes. Be careful not to overheat.
  • Add Ins: Once the oils have fully melted and are well mixed, remove from heat. Let the mixture cool slightly, and then add the essential oils and vitamin E oil, if using. Stir to incorporate.
  • To Make Solid Tallow Balm: Pour the balm into a glass jar and refrigerate until it hardens. Once solid, allow it to reach room temperature before use.
  • For Whipped Tallow Balm: Pour the mixture into a shallow dish or bowl and allow it to cool down for about 20-30 minutes, or until it begins to solidify but is still soft to the touch (not fully hardened). (If it gets too hard, then whipping it into a smooth consistency will be difficult as chunks will remain throughout the balm.)
  • Whip the Balm: Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture on high speed for 3-5 minutes, or until it becomes light, airy, and fluffy. The texture should resemble whipped cream or butter.
  • Storage: Store your tallow balm in a small jar. It can last for several months. (Ours lasts well over a year.)
  • Use: Apply a small amount to your skin, especially on dry areas such as elbows, knees, hands, or feet. It’s a great moisturizer for the face or body too!

Notes

    • Store at room temperature in a dark place or out of direct sunlight.
    • You can customize this balm with different essential oils based on your skin’s needs. For example, lavender essential oil is soothing, tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, and chamomile is calming.
